The Ancestry of Smaug and the Dragons of the First Age

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic legendarium, dragons have a rich and terrifying history in Middle-earth. While Smaug is the most famous dragon of the Third Age, he shares a lineage with the fearsome dragons of the First Age, which were spawned by Morgoth, the Dark Lord.

The Birth of Glaurung and the Dragons of the First Age

During the early wars of the First Age, Morgoth created his first dragon, Glaurung. These initial dragons were not winged like their later relatives but bound to the land. In 260 of the First Age, Glaurung revealed himself against the wishes of Morgoth and caused great destruction among the Noldor elves.

Fast forward to the Third Age, we find Smaug, who is connected to these ancient dragons through lineage. The dragons of the north, including Smaug, had multiplied and became a mighty force by 2570. They waged war on the Dwarves of the Grey Mountains, causing them great harm for 19 years until their eventual defeat.

Smaug and the Legacy of the First Age Dragons

Smaug, although not directly mentioned in relation to Glaurung or other dragons of the First Age, shares similarities in terms of his power, cunning, and destruction. His sack of Erebor is but one tale in a long line of devastation caused by dragons throughout Middle-earth’s history.

The Future of Dragons in Middle-earth

Although Smaug was slain by Bard the Bowman, his lineage and legacy live on. The dragons of the First Age, led by Glaurung, are a constant reminder of the destructive power that these creatures can wield in Middle-earth.
