Introduction: The Aftermath of the Battle of Five Armies

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic tale, The Hobbit, a fellowship of 14 Dwarves, Bilbo Baggins, and Gandalf the Grey embarked on a perilous quest to reclaim their homeland from Smaug the Dragon. Although some members of this company met their end during the Battle of Five Armies, others lived for many years beyond.

The Fate of Thorin and His Kin

Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of this valiant company, was mortally wounded in the Battle of Five Armies. As he lay dying upon the battlefield, his nephews Kili and Fili perished defending their uncle. Bilbo Baggins, who had been knocked unconscious during the battle while wearing the Ring, was discovered by Thorin in his final moments.

In a poignant scene, Thorin bid farewell to Bilbo: “Farewell, good thief,” he said. “I go now to the halls of waiting to sit beside my father’s until the world is renewed.”

The Legacy of the Lonely Mountain

Erebor, the Lonely Mountain, was reclaimed from Smaug by this intrepid company. The victory marked a significant turning point for the Dwarven nation, which had been forced to flee its homeland for centuries.

In the aftermath of the battle, Erebor’s population and economy flourished. Many more Dwarves from the Iron Hills joined the ranks of the newfound Lonely Mountain community.

The Unknown Fates

While we know the fates of some of Dale’s survivors, such as Thorin and his nephews Kili and Fili, many others remain shrouded in mystery. The tales of their adventures beyond the events of The Hobbit are yet to be fully uncovered.
