Tolkien Lore: Why Azog the Defiler was Actually Dead in the Books

Introduction
Azog, the Defiler, is a towering figure in Middle-earth lore, portrayed as one of the main antagonists in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy. However, his true story and fate within J.R.R. Tolkien’s written legendarium are far more complex.
Development
- Though the exact date of Azog’s birth is unknown, it is likely he was one of the orcs sent by Sauron to Moria around 2480 of the Third Age.
- Azog lived in Moria for many years and rose to a position of power among the orcs, becoming known as a great orc chieftain.
- In 2790, King Thror of Erebor traveled from his dwarven settlement near Dunland to Moria. As he approached the city, the gates were open, and he entered without warning. However, Azog was waiting, and Thror’s body was later found with a severed head.
- The name “Azog” became infamous among the dwarves, marking the end of their rule in Moria.

Conclusion
In contrast to his portrayal in the movies, Azog met his end at the hands of King Thror. This tragic event marked a turning point in Middle-earth’s history, signaling the fall of Moria and the exile of the dwarves.
