The War of The Ring

The War of The RingThe War of The Ring is the third history in the book “The History of the Lord of the Rings”, and “The History of Middle Earth” story number eight.

It was edited by Christopher Tolkien and published in 1990 by Unwin Hyman.

In The War of The Ring, Christopher Tolkien resumes the story of the redaction in “The Lord of the Rings”, with the episodes of The Battle of Helm’s Deep and Isengard’s inundation. After this there’s the tale of how Frodo, Sam and Gollum reached finally to The Pass of Cirith Ungol. Tolkien commented: “I have the hero in so many troubles that not even the author will be able to take it off without a lot of hard work”

Then the Gondor’s war continues, and the book ends in the encounter between Gandalf and the Dark Lord ambassador in the Black Door of Mordor.

A lot of very unpredictable episodes that then were very important appeared in the mind of the author: the palantír that brokes into million of pieaces in the stairs of Orthanc, of an unknown nature even for the author, of the entrance of Faramir in the story.
